Brian Alfermann

dsc01805.JPGBrian is married to an intelligent older (3 months) woman, who is his primary sponsor. They are currently circling the nation as a traveling Physical Therapist and wanna-be-Pro Bike Racer.

Although Brian started racing in 2001, this will be his first year as a dedicated cyclist. He started his racing career at St. Louis University and ended his collegiate career as SLU’s all-time highest placed rider at Collegiate Criterium Nationals. The next three years he spent working his way up the corporate ladder, until one day he decided that he had a little bit of unfinished business on the bike. He had always been an above average racer, but never made the full commitment. There was always school or work, but now there is just the bike.

His parents call him Brian but if you hear Schvonzie called out you you now know who they are talking about. Years ago Brian started working at a bike shop in St. Louis as summer help along with two other guys. The head mechanic said since they were only there for the summer, he wasn’t going to learn names, instead he gave them numbers; Brian was number 3. After he lasted the summer, he was promoted to actually having a name. There was already a Brian who worked there, so they used his last name, but no one could remember it so they called him Alfer-Schvonz. Over time, the Alfer got dropped, and it just became Schvonzie. To this day Brian doesn’t know where the original Schvonz part of the name came from.
